You probably don’t need to be told that the Fort Walton Beach area has some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. With white sand beaches framing turquoise blue waters and emerald green palm trees swaying in the wind, it just doesn’t get any better than this. But our little corner of the panhandle is more than beaches and palm trees: We have forests of trees in which many of Mother Nature’s creatures make their homes, and when you start planning your nature and wildlife journey to Fort Walton Beach, the beauty and serenity of the area will touch your heart as it feeds your soul.
Day 1: Nature from Your Balcony at The Breakers- Florida Wildlife
We get it, after a day of travel you’re probably not going to feel up to doing much more than unpacking and relaxing, but on day one of your journey, nature comes to you! Pour a glass of wine that you picked up on your way into town and walk the few steps to your balcony for a view unlike no other! Depending on which unit you rent, watching the waves break against the shores as the sun sets over the seas will be an experience you will never forget; and if you witness a school of dolphins frolicking in the surf, it only gets better!
Day 2: Aquarium Adventures
A visit to one of the most popular Florida wildlife parks- The Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park will be the perfect first step in your nature and wildlife journey, offering the opportunity to learn about the creatures that make their homes in the Gulf while still being entertained! The animal encounters are our favorite part, allowing us to get up close and personal with dolphins, turtles, penguins, and so much more, but don’t let us influence you; every minute of your visit promises to be an adventure you won’t soon forget!
Day 3: Look to the Skies
From the seas to the skies, today’s Florida wildlife journey will be for the birds—literally! Our region is on the superhighway of the migration route and the sheer number and variety of species found here make it a popular escape for birdwatchers from all over the world! From the great blue herons to ospreys to the state bird, the northern mockingbird, all you have to do to spot any of these or the hundreds of other species that migrate here every winter is look up. It’s that easy, but if you want a specific location, the East Jetty in Destin is a popular bird watching location!
Day 4: The Mighty Oak
The magnificent oak tree is a sight to behold, as the older it gets, the bigger it grows, and the Oak Tree Nature Preserve is a favorite of nature lovers of all ages. Located on Hollywood Boulevard in nearby Mary Esther, it’s the perfect spot for taking a hike and taking a deep breath as you release all the bad energy and breathe in the good. Offering a wooden boardwalk and benches for relaxing along the trails, this small park and preserve found on the edge of a neighborhood may be the highlight of your journey!
Day 5: The Wetlands
It’s been a very full week of adventures in Fort Walton Beach, and although we are nearing the end of your Florida wildlife journey, we aren’t through yet! Today the beauty of nature will be revealed with another walk in the park. The Mattie Kelly Park and Nature Walk in beautiful Destin is our destination. This bayou wetlands preserve offers a picnic area—so don’t forget to pack a lunch—and a pier which is a popular location for crabbing and fishing. Hiking through this wetlands area isn’t just good exercise; it allows the opportunity for bird watching and communing with nature.
Day 6: It’s a Beach Day
If you have strictly followed the journey we have mapped out for you, with the exception of the East Jetty in Destin, you’ve been here six whole days and have barely seen the beach! We’re about to remedy that right now, and your choices are plentiful. Waking up early for a sunrise hike on the beach outside your Breakers cozy condo is the best way to start your day, and because it’s close and easy to access, it may be where you want to spend the entire day! If you’re in the mood for a short drive, just across the bridge in Destin lie some of the most beautiful beaches you’ve ever seen, and the parks that engulf them are all ADA accessible, so everyone in your family can enjoy their splendor! Henderson Beach State Park is one of our favorite places on earth. Will it be yours, too?
Day 7: Say It Isn’t So
Today you are about to embark on the final leg of your journey, but this isn’t a sad time; it’s impossible to be sad when you’re surrounded by the beauty of the Gulf. One last sunrise walk on the beach, one last cup of coffee on the balcony of your Breakers condo, and one last farewell. This isn’t goodbye—you know you’ll be back.
